A modern-day B-movie queen, Rose McGowan is well-known for her definitive role in Gregg Araki’s ’90s teen-angst thriller The Doom Generation. Her irresistible venom has also landed her roles in movies like Encino Man, Bio-Dome, Scream, Nowhere, Jawbreaker, Grindhouse, Machete, and Conan the Barbarian. She will next appear in the fittingly dark big-screen adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, with Peter Bogdanovich.
First big break: The Doom Generation. Since then I’ve: gone up and down and all around.
My favorite character that I’ve played to date is: Cherry Darling in Planet Terror.
My next project is: A short film I directed called Dawn. It’s produced by RSA/Blackdog and is super legit. Not a vanity piece. I’ve also found a feature to direct. I have no desire to act in any movie I direct.
Big budget films tend to be: Mindbogglingly wasteful. Also, I wanted to write the word mindbogglingly.
If I wasn’t acting, I’d be: Happier
There is a very Working Woman vibe to this shoot. Have you ever worked in an office? When I was 15 & 1/2 I worked at a public relations firm that specialized in health care. Big pharma companies. I posed as a graduate of the USC School of Communications, which may or may not exist. I got fired for telling a doctor he was a sad representation of the Hippocratic Oath.
What is the most surreal thing that has happened to you since you began working in Hollywood? I like to make sure my real life is more surreal than my fake life.
Tell us a strange or uncomfortable personal secret. If I take a sleeping pill, I sleep shop online. I just got a plastic unicorn head in the mail. I also bought a car on eBay after taking an Ambien.
Do you have any unusual habits? I sleep with true crime shows playing in the background. My dog snores, so I sleep with death to drown him out.
What is your work philosophy? Be professional. Be considerate of others. Don’t abuse your power. Ever. Be a mensch. Look it up. I hate working with assholes.
What is your philosophy on getting into character? Actors that talk about this sort of thing make me gag. I’ll have to excuse myself from answering this question.
